But as most of these factors have been ruled out--poorer cities with high levels of pollution often have lower allergy levels, for example--an alternative explanation has taken the lead. Scientists suggest that now that many of the most harmful bugs in our environment have been eradicated with modern sanitation and medicine, our immune systems turn their attack on usually harmless molecules, such as those in cat dander or dust mites.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://newsinscience.blogspot.com/2008/01/allergys-from-being-too-antiseptic.html' title='Allergys from being too antiseptic? Think again. A first-of-its-kind program combines med students, paleontologists, and cutting-edge technology ... And the program's founders say doctors of tomorrow will be better ... if they study dinosaurs to uncover prehistoric medical links between the present and the very distant past. What do dinosaurs have in common with people today? More than you might think! Fossil technicians process dinosaur bones to find out. With the use of medical physics such as a CT scan of a dinosaur bone, paleontologists find themselves light-years ahead. It's a non-invasive way to see what earlier researchers have only been able to guess. Carnegie Museum of Natural History paleontologist Chris Beard says by studying the evolution of prehistoric animals, today's medical students can understand the origins of some common medical problems. "This is, as far as we know, the oldest evidence of cancer in the fossil record," he tells DBIS of a softball-sized tumor in a 150-million-year-old dinosaur bone.

Why Exertion Leads To Exhaustion

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/12/071220103702.htm --- ScienceDaily (Dec. 28, 2007) — Scientists have found an explanation for runners who struggle to increase their pace, cyclists who can't pedal any faster and swimmers who can't speed up their strokes. Should evidence emerge that runs counter to Darwin's theories, creationist thinking goes, it is quickly suppressed by the scientific thought police. Now retired chemist Homer Jacobson may have inadvertently lent the conspiracy theorists a helping hand. The trouble started when Jacobson, formerly at Brooklyn College in New York, did a web search for his own name. Among the top results were creationist websites. They cited a 1955 paper on the origin of life, in which Jacobson discussed the challenges of explaining how the chemical building blocks of life emerged. Creationists say his paper shows that divine intervention must have been involved. In a letter in this month's edition of American Scientist, the journal in which the original article appeared, Jacobson retracts two paragraphs from it. He says that subsequent developments have shown his conjectures ...

James Watson retires amidst race controversy - opinion - 25 October 2007 - New Scientist

http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn12835&feedId=online-news_rss20 --- DNA co-discover and Nobel laureate James Watson, who caused outrage last week by characterising people of African descent as genetically inferior, has announced his retirement chancellor of the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Watson has been embroiled in controversy because of comments he made to a UK newspaper concerning the intelligence of Africans. New research suggests that the structure helps beneficial bacteria survive and repopulate the colon after these organisms become depleted as a result of an infection or drug treatment. Beneficial bacterial, also referred to as commensal bacteria, help maintain a proper balance in the intestine and may also kill dangerous microbes. For example, this is why patients frequently develop gastrointestinal problems during or after a course of antibiotics. Along with the pathogen causing the infection, the antibiotic may destroy commensal bacteria as well. This report 'proposes a novel and unique function for the human appendix, for which the appendix is well suited', said senior author Dr William Parker, from Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. 'Importantly, the proposal explains clearly why the function is not evident in our industrialised culture.'

Early modern humans had a taste for seafood - being-human - 17 October 2007 - New Scientist

http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=mg19626265.200&feedId=online-news_rss20 ---
"OUR ancestors dined on seafood, painted their bodies and made delicate stone blades 164,000 years ago, much earlier than previously realised. The discovery means that these cultural features must have developed soon after modern humans evolved. The evidence comes from a cave in South Africa overlooking the Indian Ocean. Researchers led by Curtis Marean, an anthropologist at Arizona State University in Tempe, excavated a collection of shellfish remains, ochre pigments and stone blades, some of which were just a centimetre wide. The team dated the earliest material to 164,000 years ago, give or take 12,000 years (Nature, DOI: 10.1038/nature06204). This fits with estimates of sea level during that period, which indicate that the cave was only within easy walking distance of the shore about 167,000 years ago. The earliest previous record of humans eating shellfish dates from about 125,000 years ago. Abundant shellfish may have encouraged groups to settle in one place instead of wandering nomadically and provided them with leisure time for activities such as body adornment."

ScienceDaily: Fish Get Insomnia, Eyes Wide Open, Say Sleep Researchers

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/10/071015215148.htm These molecules bind to the protein actin which is implicated in cell movement and cell division. According to experimental results published recently in Biophysical Journal the ability of actin to join to long chains is either hindered or improved. A new study in Nature suggests that the brain pathways for male sexual behavior are also present in female mice, and with those pathways comes the potential for male behavior. Even more intriguing is that the activation of these pathways appears to be regulated by the animal's sense of smell.

Schizophrenia is selected for in evolution?

It's No Delusion: Evolution May Favor Schizophrenia Genes

It's not cast-iron proof that high-fructose corn syrup causes diabetes, but new evidence suggests we should think twice about using it to sweeten soft drinks.

Chi-Tang Ho at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and his colleagues found that adding the syrup to fizzy drinks makes them up to 10 times richer in harmful carbonyl compounds - elevated in people with diabetes and blamed for causing diabetic complications such as foot ulcers and eye and nerve damage - than fizzy drinks containing cane sugar.

The most harmful compound, called methylglyoxal, is known to damage cells directly. "The link between methylglyoxal and diabetic complications is well documented," says Ho, whose team found carbonyl compounds in 11 popular brands of soft drink sweetened with the syrup.

High-fructose corn syrup is popular in the US, where import tariffs make cane sugar relatively expensive. They all respond to light, which affects how they optimise growth and survival. Plants also have a sense of touch , allowing them to stiffen in response to wind, and a "taste" for nutrients. But whether they respond to sound is a mystery.

Now Mi-Jeong Jeong of the National Institute of Agricultural Biotechnology in Suwon, South Korea, and colleagues claim to have identified two genes in rice that respond to sound waves. They also say that the promoter of one of the sound-sensitive genes could be attached to other genes to make them respond to sound too.

The findings follow a host of similar, but unsubstantiated, claims that plants respond to sound. If the researchers are correct, they say their discovery could enable farmers to switch specific crop genes on and off, such as ones for flowering, by blasting sound into the fields. Red blood cells have no need for DNA and eject it once they become mature, and dying cells disintegrate, releasing DNA into the body.
Wow! This throws the question back into the limelight again. Nutritionists and I (based on common sense) both say that eating at night doesn't make you fat. but it is true that when I am keeping late hours I tend to want to snack. This article states a link between circadian rythmn and food. Which doesn't explain anything (for me) but it does point out something on the side that obese ppl typically consume more than half their calories at night!

Working night shifts and the risk of Parkinson's disease

link to news report
link to abstract

Gasp! Night shifts might be protective against Parkinson's? That's what the study is suggesting although the authors and I would be cautious about taking this too far. (in fact I didn't believe it and searched for the scientific journal to be sure). One possibility is that "habitual longer sleep duration may be an earlier marker of Parkinson's disease" going through the other literature apparently sleep disorders are associated with Parkinson's. Although when one considers that smoking might have a protective effect against Parkinson's it might be possible that certain areas of the brain are stimulated(possibly the dopaminergic neurons) and therefore provide protection against this disease.

Mother’s Presence Can Override Fear in Rat Pups

Link to SCIAM
"At the tender age of 10 days or so young rats first venture outside the nest, leaving the comforting presence of their mother. Meanwhile, neuroscientists have found that the need for reward is hardwired into various regions of the brain (ScienceNOW, 16 June 2005). When researchers stimulate these regions in the lab, animals overeat, particularly seeking out sweet and fatty foods."

Just when you are feeling sympathetic for the obese, the psychologist does add that many motivated ppl are not obese so its just part of the reason but not the whole story.

A Tale of mothballs, worms and cancer

Link to Science

I love stories of accidental discoveries in science. It takes an observant eye and analytical mind to see events as they are. This one is about mothballs and worms. The chance meeting of the two led to a discovery of how mothballs(yiks common household stuff) can cause cancer in C.elegans (a nematode, worm) through deactivation of a caspase enzyme(a protein that activates a cell to self-destruct when old, unlike cancer cells which go on living). Always wanted to know how the 'happy' drug works. According to this, prozac works by increasing the number of neurons in the hippocampus! This is amazing because it prob wasn't too long ago that scientists discovered that brain cells do indeed multiply(unlike previous thoughts) and the possible implication that too little neurons or selective death of hippocampal neurons is possibly the culprit for depression!! Ah hem, lay persons please do not link depressed ppl with lower IQ cos of less brain cells. BUT in lesbians it doesn't happen.
you would would think so what if you use women 'pheromone' on lesbains? they used EST derived from oestrogen (fd in pregnant women urine) but it has no effect on lesbian brains either..

haha my take is
1) lesbian brains have faulty wiring
OR
2) they used wrong 'pheromone'
I mean PLEASE? Researchers estimate that "bleaching" could kill up to 60% of coral within a few decades. But a new study published in tomorrow's issue of Nature reports that some species may be equipped with a previously unknown coping mechanism that helps them survive bleaching events. The discovery could help scientists better predict how reefs will respond to global warming.

Fwd: Pets: Considering Health Risks with Reptile Ownership

Text here is copyright of Dummies eTips visit http://www.dummies.com/
for more! It is illegal
to keep anything other than the red ear slider (terrapin) in Singapore
anyway. Furthermore they have been always abandoned after they have
grown too big. So why bother with reptiles? One of the most highly publicized zoonoses (diseases that can be passed, directly or indirectly, from animals to humans) in recent years has been salmonella. The reason salmonella is a problem with reptiles is that the strains or types of salmonella that typically infect them are different from those we normally encounter in our food. These strains can cause symptoms ranging from very mild to potentially lethal. Even mild strains can be deadly to humans who have compromised or immature immune systems: infants, toddlers, the elderly, anyone with a suppressed immune system due to illness, organ transplant patients taking anti-rejection drugs, or cancer patients receiving chemotherapy.

Make informed decision with the information and insight in Iguanas For
Dummies, by Melissa Kaplan.

Wildlife thrives more from absence of humans than radiation from,Chernobyl

link from BBC news "it contains some of the most contaminated land in the world, yet it has become a haven for wildlife - a nature reserve in all but name." kevin:not exactly a science news, but its strange how humans don't consider themselves to be a parasite or pest when I would argue that as a species our overall biomass is prob more than cockroaches.
